Growing Power, founded by Will Allen, has served since its inception as a “living museum” or “idea factory” for urban farmers, producers, and other professionals ranging from USDA personnel to urban planners. What started as a simple partnership to change the landscape of the North Side of Milwaukee has blossomed into a national and global commitment to sustainable food systems. Training areas include the following: Anaerobic digestion for food waste, soil health, aquaculture closed-loop systems, small and large scale composting, urban agriculture, food distribution, marketing, value-added product development, youth development, participatory leadership development, and project planning.
The Community Action Organization of Erie County (CAO), is a nonprofit organization based in Buffalo, New York. Founded in 1965, the CAO is a community based, citizen-driven organization. Their primary mission is to help citizens move toward self-sufficiency by addressing the sources their problems. To that end, CAO provides a wide range of services to nearly 9,000 low-income families, and nearly 20,000 low-income individuals across Erie County each year.
Sun Farm Network’s (SFN) mission is making solar power accessible to thousands of motivated consumers, and to removing the barriers that have historically put solar power out of reach for the average person. SFN recognizes that most people can’t afford a large up-front expense, don’t want to hassle with the details, and are hesitant to assume sole responsibility for maintaining the system. SFN does all the work so you don’t have to, making solar energy as affordable, convenient, and worry free as buying power from your electric utility!
Buffalo Works, Newark Works and Jersey City Works are the workforce development agencies for each city, whose mission is to provide employment resources and training for the citizens of Buffalo, Newark, and Jersey City respectively. The One Stop Employment Centers in each city offers a single point of access to comprehensive services needed to successfully enter or re-enter the workforce (e.g., assessment, training and job placement).
Local 55 of the New Jersey Building Labor Union provides a six weeks green pre-construction laborer training program emphasizing health, safety and green construction job skills.
LB Electric Company creates green jobs for Newark residents installing solar panels on buildings all over the State of New Jersey. In addition, Professor Baptiste of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has developed a solar panel training program that culminates with each participant receiving a “Solar Panel Installation Certificate” from NJIT and an apprenticeship in Local 164 of the electrician’s union.
The Total Veggie Bio-Fuel Company specializes in converting used restaurant cooking oil into bio-diesel fuel and selling conversion kits that enable car engines to achieve greater fuel efficiency.
Transload America (TLA) is a green recycling company that partners with local communities to provide employment, education and environmental literacy, in relation to the waste recycling process. In addition, TLA has created an entrepreneur waste recycling program to help new businesses take advantage of other waste reprocessing wealth creation opportunities.
Dirt Works Farms manufactures high quality green product designed to replace the toxic chemical products we use everyday. They provide lots of information about their products and how to use them effectively. They manufacture products for, natural cleaning, pest control, home heating, fall lawn care and cover crops for gardens and farms.
New Jersey Institute of Technology School of Architecture is the most comprehensive source of knowledge in New Jersey on green building, natural lighting, water conservation, and integrating sustainable energy systems into building designs.
The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN) is a non-profit organization of local business people, professionals, social entrepreneurs, investors, non-profit leaders, and government representatives who are committed to building a more socially, environmentally, and financially sustainable local economy. SBN is a founding member of Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), a national alliance of local business networks in North America that are building living economies in their regions.
Green for All is a national organization dedicated to building an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty. By advocating for local, state and federal commitment to job creation, job training, and entrepreneurial opportunities in the emerging green economy – especially for people from disadvantaged communities – Green for All fights both poverty and pollution at the same time.
The Green Depot’s mission is to make green building products and services readily accessible, so that green building can be easily adopted into standard construction operations. Their goal is to help establish sustainable building as cost competitive, and provide products of the highest quality that are certified green, and guaranteed through their proprietary chain of custody. Green Depot offers a broad range of superior quality, sustainable product lines, including: ceilings, walls, flooring, insulation, janitorial, soundproofing, paint, lawn & garden, lighting & electrical. The SOS Program is a prison reentry program in Newark, New Jersey that provides a continuous counseling and support network for individuals who are making the difficult transition from prison back into society.
The Apollo Alliance is a coalition of business, labor, environmental, and community leaders working to catalyze a clean energy revolution in America to reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil, cut the carbon emissions that are destabilizing our climate, and expand opportunities for American businesses and workers. The alliance promotes policies and initiatives that speed up investment in clean energy technology, and make America a global leader in clean energy products and services.
